It seemed like some time since I had been around the head. Wheel spoke like beams of sunlight reached through the cloud and cast a glistening reflection across the sea. With time the Isle of wight came into view. Flowers clung onto castle Buddleia and Valerian. I noticed the chest high regrowth of Poplar above the Dell. Wood Pigeons rose from the coast path. Below the Noon bench, two stems of Greater Mullein held seed pods. Slowly gliding past the Dell were a pair of silent Herring Gulls. Upon the terrace were the dark fruits of Hypericum Perforatum. Beneath the stems of Woodsage, holding seeds, were beautiful Common Toadflax flowers. A woven hurdle barrier had begun to be colonised by Wild Madder. Long reaching stems of Willow, which hung over the caravan terrace rock face, creaked in the breeze. At Durlston head Tamarisk, Sycamore and Holm Oak (holding acorns) moved by the wind.
Up above the Globe a solitary Goldfinch was amongst Blackthorn. Stems of Sea Aster flowered beside the coast path, whilst a bounty Rock Samphire flowered both on and on both sides of the cliff top dry-stone wall. Over the wall a Peregrine Falcon perched on the grassland / rock face margin facing inland whilst peering west. I admire it clean white “bib” a striped breast. Most birds today were seen to fly eastwards of these a single Fulmar, which paused to fly some cliff face arcs. Of course, Jackdaws hung out above and below the Observation Point. Old Man’s Beard showed flowers (with eye lashes) and wispy seeds. Wild Madder fruits were yet to darken.
Near Tilly Whim, another bird of prey passed before heading inland. My suspicions that this was a Sparrow Hawk were latter confirmed when observed near the gully rock face. Here the predator had interactions with a pair of Jays and Jackdaws. Eventually it disappeared as it wove between gully tree cover.
At least half a group of half a dozen juvenile Pheasants, raced to cover through the dry sun-bleached gully slopes grassland. A silent Raven flew east but its call was heard later. Another day, for now, of House Martin and Swallow activity. Autumn begins?
