Saturday 14th May

The weather this morning was beautiful bright and sunny with only a slight breeze. Walking past the wildlife garden into the meadow a Pigeon was sat on a gate post as if to great me. Walking on I admired the Hawthorn blossom and noticed an Ash just coming back into leaf.

I could hear a Green Woodpecker calling which would continue on and off for the star of my walk, as if taunting me as no matter how hard I looked I couldn’t see him. Two cock Pheasants could also be heard calling to each other on and off as well.

Walking through to Saxon field a Skylark was calling from the top of a Sycamore taking a break from singing on the wing. I noticed a few Early Purple Orchids that had sadly gone over and four Blue Bells that seemed sum what out of place. Approaching the far gate of the field a Jay flew past heading for the hawthorn.

Turning towards the see I could see what looked to be a shipping container on the water slowly chugging along. Looking down into the gully full of Hawthorn in blossom I thought it looked like snow-covered trees. A Jack Daw sored past and dived down into the gully.

Walking along the lighthouse road I admired the Horseshoe Vetch then stopping to look down into the stone quarr a Blue Tit fly out the entrance to the Quarry, maybe it has a nest there. Once at the top of the light house field I noticed some Early English Gentian flowering just of the path, I had seen this patch previously but not in flower as it was too cloudy that day, so seeing it in flower today was a real treat.

Walking along the cliffs I listened to the sound of the waves crashing into the cliffs which I find to be a very pleasant sound. A Fulmar gracefully swoops past soon followed by two Herring Gulls. Looking out the sea a 30 strong group of Guillemots could be seen bopping about on the water taking a break from looking after their eggs and preening themselves. The smell of the Guillemot cave wafted up on the sea air smelling strongly of bad fish while the cave itself seemed as busy and cramped like it usually is.

Heading back up the hill the runners for park run were stretching and readying themselves for there run on this lovely sunny morning.
