Sunday 24 April 2022

This morning I was witness to a gorgeous sunrise, the sun a deep red orb in the sky, a wonderful raft of colours across the sky, but only for a short time before turning blue.

The woodland alive with the sound of birds.  A large flock of 15 or so Carrion Crows were cawing noisily from the branches of Sycamore, Ash and Holm Oak.

In amongst the three-large leaves of a Horse Chestnut a few of their amazing white candelabras are now in full flower, and perched here was a Chaffinch reeling off its song, going slow, slow then racing quickly.

A laughing chuckle made me turn, just in time to see a Green Woodpecker undulate across the landslip and land on the trunk of a Willow, awash with furry ends and pale leaves.

A great view of a Wren in amongst the flower covered Bird Cherry, the loud rattling song drowning out the calls of the Wood Pigeons which were perched in the Dogwood nearby.

The woodland floor was showing off the deep blue Bluebells and white Ramsons, as well as masses of yellow Lesser Celandines in the glade.

Sliming across the path a number of Garden Snails, while Lesser Bloody-nosed Beetles and Greater Bloody-nosed Beetles could be watched as they to wandered across the ground – a very mechanical movement in my mind!

A report from the cliffs of a Whimbrel a landing on the ledges of Tilly Whim, while Rock Pipits were also flitting in the same area.

A couple of Razorbills standing high on the cliffs, making for an easy identification, while Fulmars zoomed in and out.

The Guillemots on the ledges have begun laying eggs, come and have a look in Durlston Castle Visitor Centre.
