Sunday 30 January, 2022

A glorious early morning with a layer of white frost lying in a few areas – particularly on the northern slopes and hollows.

The sound of Wrens the most abundant noise as I walked out over the farmland, the rattle of these birds so much louder than you might expect from this tiny bird!

The low sunlight producing a wonderful effect on the scrub, where the chest of a Robin was being lit up, a brilliant deep orange.

The Blackthorn along one of the older hedgerows is draped in Lichen, grey-green fronds hanging from the branches.

The burst of song coming from amongst the rough grass of the meadow, turned my attention where 3 Skylarks were flitting up just above the vegetation, then dropping again.  The wings bending downwards in a beautiful shape as it fluttered, their song today just a few calls.

The field behind the lighthouse dotted with the brown and white bodies of the Hereford Cattle, one of which was being used as a view point by a Jackdaw as it perched on its shoulders.

From the bushes came the cackling of a Blackbird, followed by a sudden movement of a paler thrush, once it landed in the Hawthorn its pale feathers, in a stripe just above its eye was visible, and as it moved slightly the dark red patch under its wing allowed full identification of this Redwing

Gliding across the virtually cloudless sky was a Sparrowhawk, a longish tail and wide wings alongside the flap-flap-glide as it travelled making this identification easier – sometimes birds of prey can be really quite difficult to tell apart.

As the buds of some of the Daffodils are getting ready to burst open, Winter Heliotrope is already in flower as are patches of Gorse – but then this flowers all year
