Sunday 28th November 2021

What a quite glorious morning, blue sky, brilliant golden sunshine and a gentle wind – such a contract with yesterday’s wind!

With a chuckle a Great Spotted Woodpecker arrived in amongst the branches of the Willow, a super view of the red trousers, flashing as it walked it way up the tree, the red splash on its head also easily seen against the black and white of the rest of its body – stunning.

As I wandered across the downland, the ‘chatting ‘ of Stonechats accompanied me, these smart birds using the fence posts as well as the Gorse as perches.

The bottom of Field 10a looking a bit like a moonscape, covered in numerous smooth round lumps of Yellow Meadow Ant hills, with clumps of Parasol mushrooms, mostly now past their best.

We have been cutting and removing the small Gorse regrowth recently across the area of grassland to make sure that the invertebrates and flora that require short grass can flourish, we’ll be moving onto the quarry hollows and high er section next – if you fancy helping do give us a call.

From the cliffs the sound of a Peregrine Falcon, a short scream, but this morning being answered by a second bird, so a wonderful few minutes were spent watching these two birds of prey displaying, rising up, down and floating a short way past before returning.

Along the cliffs a single Rock Pipit, while a Meadow Pipit piped just near the lighthouse.

Landing in amongst the dead sagging heads of Woolly Thistle were 4 Goldfinches, flashes of gold, red, black and white and a tinkle of sound.

Although the wildlife was showing quite well, a sudden emergence of a Roe Deer whizzing over the ridge and up and over a dry-stone wall was the result of badly controlled dogs, hopefully the Deer will survive the fright and shock of being chased by these revolting dogs who should only return if on leads.
