Tuesday 26th October, 2021

There was a damp Autumnal feel to the morning, it being overcast with spots of rain. I glimpsed a Field Scabious flower as a much chattering charm of Goldfinches passed overhead. A Squirrel chattered from the Holm Oak cover which hid a Jay that squawked from within Castle Wood. Leaves cloak the wooded part of the diagonal path, beside which stood the evergreen leaves of Stinking Iris and fronds of Harts Tongue Fern.

Beside the diagonal path the fluffy seed heads of Wild Bay Willow Herb and Old Man’s Beard were ready to set to the wind. Occasional clusters of yellow Gorse flowers were enjoyed. The perch of a Dunnock was soon occupied by a Stonechat pair. A familiar red hulled fish vessel was seen offshore whilst one Gannet headed west flying low over the sea. Again, a Greater Black Backed Gull perched above a vacant Guillemot cliff cave. Soon a Shag flew past also to perch on the mid cliff face. Another Shag left the cliff to head straight out to sea. A third Shag initially left the cliffs, headed west then turned 360 degrees to go east.

Near Tilly Whim a score of Feral Doves ever so briefly paused on the cliff top before dispersing. Towards to gully mouth dry Thrift Heads and Golden Samphire were attempting to set fluffy seeds to the wind. One Jackdaw perched upon the telephone wire and another upon the electricity line over the gully. A few more Jackdaws passed over the gully to converge about the Lighthouse, chuckling on their way. I noted possible dew drops upon some Red Fescue blades upon an Ant Hill near the gully mouth. One Red Clover flower stood nearby.

Masts dangled from the Sycamore trees sheltered in the gully ravine. Near the gully rock exposure, a Robin sang out. Plenty of insect burrows, slightly smaller than the diameter of a pencil, with spoil piles were seen upon patches of bare soil.  The Bird Ringers reported the capture of: Goldcrest, Blackcap, Redwing, Song Thrush and a Bullfinch.
