A lovely brisk morning today, golden rays of sunlight streaming through patches of cloud leaving a glorious sheen on the water. Setting out into the meadows Robins were in full song and I paused for a moment to enjoy their dulcet tones. Moving on a Blackbird chattered and dashed for cover in Saxon Field whilst Goldfinches chirped and cheeped in a flock above.

Along the East/West Drove was a wealth of Autumn harvest waiting for the birds. The bright red of Black Bryony berries, striking orange of Stinking Iris berries, and that gorgeous deep red of haws covering nearly bare Hawthorn. Indeed, as the sun rose and took the chill off the morning Dunnocks, Blue Tits, and Great Tits all hopped around the thicket gorging on the bounty.

Out in Johnston Field I was met with a stunning view over the sea. Beams of sunlight cast a glittering show across the water, a citrus yellow glow amongst the clouds, and a flock of Wood Pigeon ducking and diving in sync.

In the downlands now I met with a Yellowhammer, its bright yellow standing out beautifully against red haws in a Hawthorn. An unusual sight high above the downs was a Great Spotted Woodpecker, usually so elusive in woodlands this one landed in pain sight on a patch of Bramble, probably the best view I’ve ever had of one. As it took to the wing I continued towards the lighthouse. Looking out towards the east I spied a flash of orange and white as a Fox dashed away as soon as I came into view.

Taking a moment to look into the scrub around the Tilly Whim entrance I spotted a Chiff Chaff amongst the Tamarisk as Meadow Pipits abounded all around me.

Once back at the learning centre I saw a plucky Red Admiral braving the very chill air clearly unaware that it should be getting into hibernation mode.
